It Pays to Set the Menu: Mutual Fund Investment Options in 401(k) plans,” by Veronika K. Pool, Clemens Sialm, and Irina Stefanescu (2014-96, August 2014, .pdf format, 28p.).

Abstract:

This paper investigates whether mutual fund families acting as service providers in 401(k) plans display favoritism toward their own funds. Using a hand-collected dataset on retirement investment options, we show that poorly-performing funds are less likely to be removed from and more likely to be added to a 401(k) menu if they are affiliated with the plan trustee. We find no evidence that plan participants undo this affiliation bias through their investment choices. Finally, the subsequent performance of poorly-performing affiliated funds indicates that these trustee decisions are not information driven.

Early Withdrawals from Retirement Accounts During the Great Recession,” by Robert Argento, Victoria L. Bryant, and John Sabelhaus (November 2014, .pdf format, 26p.).

Abstract:

Early withdrawals from retirement accounts are a double-edged sword, because withdrawals reduce retirement resources, but they also allow individuals to smooth consumption when they experience demographic and economic shocks. We show that pre-retirement withdrawals trended up between 2004 and 2010, but the trend is modest given the substantial early withdrawals (particularly relative to new contributions) occurring in all of those years. Early withdrawal events are strongly correlated with shocks to income and marital status, and lower-income taxpayers are more likely to experience the types of shocks associated with early withdrawals, and they are more likely to have a taxable withdrawal when they experience a given shock.
