Number of articles that were listed under the "abortion" subject heading in the newspaper index.
Number of articles we wanted to be able to code, after ineligible sampled articles were removed.
Number of articles drawn from the Universe. This includes the articles that were sampled and considered for inclusion. Articles that were Not Located or Ineligible are included in the Sample Drawn. (Articles that were never considered for inclusion are not included in the Sample Drawn.)
Sample Goal and Sample Drawn were dependent on the Universe of articles listed in the index.
The sampling procedure followed this formula:
New York Times:
If Universe is <200: Draw 30 to meet Goal of 20
If Universe is 200-500 Draw 45 to meet Goal of 30
If Universe is >500 Draw 60 to meet Goal of 40
Los Angeles Times:
If Universe is <100 Draw 30 to meet Goal of 20
If Universe is 100-200 Draw 45 to meet Goal of 30
If Universe is >200 Draw 60 to meet Goal of 40
Articles that the sampler was not able to locate because the film was damaged, there was no mistake in the index, etc.
No Number - Ineligible:
Articles that were determined ineligible before they were numbered. (The sampler determined that these articles were too small, only gave a brief mention to abortion, were not about the United States, etc.)
Articles that were initially determined eligible and were numbered.
Numbered - Ineligible:
Articles that were determined ineligible after they were numbered.
All of the ineligible articles (No Number Ineligible + Numbered Ineligible).
Articles that were coded and included in the database.
Unadjusted Sampling Fraction:
The sampling fraction, NOT adjusted for the ineligible articles in the Sample Drawn. [Coded Articles/Universe]
Percent of eligible articles in the Sample Drawn.
[1-(Total Ineligibles/Sample Drawn)]
Adjusted Sampling Fraction:
The sampling fraction adjusted for the ineligible articles in the Sample Drawn (an approximation of the percent of ineligible articles in the Universe).
[Coded Articles / (Universe x Percent Eligible Articles)]
