my life...
i was born in los angeles and grew up in the beautiful san fernando valley. i moved around a lot in the valley but call canoga park home. i graduated from taft high school (the best high school in l.a. in my opinion) in 1999 and got a b.a in sociology from the university of california. i've been fortunate enough to have made the topic of my life and my community my profession - i like sticking to what i know. finally, i like to throw around the football and shoot hoops in my spare time. at the moment (2007-08 academic year), i am a visiting student at princeton working and taking classes with Doug Massey and Alejandro Portes. my research... my research interests go something like this: 1) migration to the u.s.; 2) immigrant incorporation within the u.s. under these two umbrellas, i study what influences people to move and what happens to them once they've made said move. i'm currently working on papers that have to do with a) the effect of violence on migration (with Doug Massey), b) race/ethnic differences in peer effects on educational outcomes (with Ruth Lopez Turley), c) neighborhood effects on low birth weight outcomes of immigrants, and d) the impacts of bilingual education on educational outcomes. i'm also on the minority recruitment and retention committee at wisconsin as well as the board of the latino graduate student association at princeton. |
