This course is an introduction to the sociological study of the major racial and ethnic minority groups in the US, including African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, and Native Americans. The first part of the course examines theoretical approaches and key concepts in the study of race and ethnicity, focusing on identity, prejudice, and discrimination. The second part reviews the historical experiences of these four minority groups. The final part of the course addresses important contemporary issues such as income inequality, residential segregation, educational inequality, minority labor markets, political participation, criminal justice, and health inequality.
