Course Description

This course is an introduction to the sociological study of the major racial and ethnic minority groups in the US, including African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanics, and American Indians. The first part of the course examines key concepts in the study of race and ethnicity, focusing on the social construction of race and ethnicity, prejudice, and discrimination. The second part reviews the historical experiences of these four groups, and the final part addresses important contemporary issues such as racial politics, ecominc and employment inequality, residential segregation, educational inequality, criminal justice, and health care inequality. Although these issues are usually taught separately by group, this course deliberately covers these issues by topic rather than by group in order to see how they intersect across groups.
