Bike Messengers

Research

I am currently conducting an ethnography of bicycle messenger occupation and culture. My current focus is on the demands of the occupation. Much more has been written about messenger culture, as the links on this webpage show. In the future, my goal is to write of the relationship between the occupation and the subculture. I will provide a more detailed description of my research after the period of data collection is complete.

There are a number of other sociological studies of bicycle messengers. See Kevin Wehr's new book, Hermes on Two Wheels, and the work of Jeffrey Kidder, a Ph.D. candidate at UC-San Diego.
