Background

"Our future is not in the stars but in our own minds and hearts. Creative leadership and liberal education, which in fact go together, are the first requirements for a hopeful future for humankind. Fostering these--leadership, learning, and empathy between cultures--was and remains the purpose of the international scholarship program that I was priviledged to sponsor in the U.S. Senate over forty years ago. It is a modest program with a n immodest aim--the achievement in international affairs of a regime more civilized, rational, and humane than the empty system of power of the past. I believed in that possibility when I began. I still do."

"The Price of Empire" 1989 Senator J. W. Fulbright

"Peace is not a negative, static concept. It is not a tranquil state of felicity and blessedness. It is a positive method of adjusting the endless conflicts inherent in the nature of restless and energetic men. The institution of law based on justice and adaptable to the ever-changing life of man has been such a method in the history of mankind." Senator J. W. Fulbright

The Wisconsin Chapter of the Fulbright Association, founded in 1999, is comprised of scholars, students and teachers who have participated in the Fulbright Program, in addition to friends of the Fulbright Program. There are over 600 Fulbright alumni living in the state of Wisconsin and each year the state welcomes over 50 visiting Fulbright scholars, teachers and students. The Chapter is appreciative of the support received by the U.S. Department of State and the national Fulbright Association to develop enrichment programs for the Fulbright visitors.

Since it was established in 1947, the Fulbright Program has provided international educational and exchange opportunities for more than 250,000 students, scholars, teachers and professionals from the United States and some 140 other countries.
