Final Letter Grade for the Course

The total score for the course has been calculated from the formula:

.1x(avg. of 6 best HW scores*)+.4x(best midterm*)+.5x(final*)

(*all partial scores expressed on 0-100 basis)

The following cutoffs have been used to obtain the final letter grade:

A 90-100, AB 85-89, B 80-84, BC 75-79, C 65-74, D below 65

(These cutoffs are slightly lower than the ones implied by the distribution given
in the syllabus -- a change to your advantage.)

We have compared the average scores for the submitted HW across TAs and the differences
were very small. On this basis, we have decided not to curve HW scores to TA.

How to Back Out Approximate Score for the Final Exam

Presuming you have all the partial scores and you know your letter grade,
you can back out the score bracket for your final exam as follows:

Upper bound = 2xUpper bound of your letter grade bracket - .2x(avg. of 6 best HW scores*)-.8x(best midterm*)
Lower bound = 2xLower bound of your letter grade bracket - .2x(avg. of 6 best HW scores*)-.8x(best midterm*)

(*all partial scores expressed on 0-100 basis)

Example:

Suppose you got a B and your average HW score was 95/100, and best midterm score was 90/100.
Then, using the above formula, you can back out the bracket in which your final score is as follows:

Upper bound = 2x84 - .2x95-.8x90 = 77
Lower bound = 2x80 - .2x95-.8x90 = 69

Your final exam score falls between 69 and 77 out of a 100.

Marry Xmas and Happy New Year!

Grading Complaints After the Semester Is Over

If you have a grading complaint, contact the head TA right after the winter
break to set an appointment. The head TAs will not send any scores via email, and may
not respond to emails before the winter break is over. The head TA will meet with you
and show you the final. No grading complaints about past midterms or HW will be
accepted at this time. You will find the email to your head TA in the TA contact info
sheet above. I WILL NOT RESPOND TO EMAILS WITH GRADING COMPLAINTS.
