Research Statement
My work considers how the changing structure of families impacts family functioning and the implications of this process for social and economic inequality. Over the past 50 years, high rates of non-marital childbearing, cohabitation, divorce, and remarriage have made family life increasingly complex. The ability of families to successfully navigate this complexity is critical for parents’ and children’s wellbeing, as well as the welfare of society as a whole. In my dissertation, I highlight the importance of young adults’ family structure history for their receipt of emotional and financial resources from their parents. As a research assistant and trainee with the Center for Demography and Ecology, I am also involved in a series of projects exploring the nature of unwed parents’ relationships and the consequences of these relationships for fathers’ involvement with their children and various child outcomes.
