Regression Modeling

In this portion of the website, I collect resources for the study of regression and time series. These resources support my book, Frees (2009), “Regression Modeling for Actuarial and Financial Applications”. This site supplements other support materials that I have available that includes statistical code and data.

Traditional books, hard copy or electronic versions, are terrific resources for a well-organized set of materials that allow for thoughtful development of a topic. There are extended discussions of selected topics and references in a book that do not make sense to feature online. For example, Frees (2009) contains detailed analyses of cases from the literature and in-depth technical supplements that are not available here.

In contrast, this online resource offers some interactive features that cannot be produced in a static book. Specifically, in this online site, I

  • integrate the use of a statistical package R that allows the viewer to create output on the fly. In contrast, the book develops general statistical principles and does not endorse, nor re-enforce, any statistical package.
  • offer video instruction for topics. Many learners find that reading works well for them whereas others enjoy the sound and dynamic content of a video.
  • feature other interactive features such as an online glossary (hover your mouse over the word variable) and quizzes to check your knowledge as you move forward.
  • hope to integrate other languages into this content going forward.

Both books and online sites offer complementary resources for learners (which is all of us). I hope you find this site useful in your studies.
