WLS Codebooks
Note: Codebooks contain frequency data from the private data release. For some variables, these differ from the frequencies in the public release. Variables that differ between the public and private versions include "(not available on public release)" as part of the variable description, or a note indicating the difference between the public and private versions.
Phone: Children's Roster
This module includes all respondents of the telephone survey plus the 661 "mail only" respondents. See the XBEG module for complete details about these "mail only" respondents. sd001kd Total number of children reported in 1993-1994 interview. Table entries, one of each for up to 18 children. Last two digits indicate the table number. Only the prefix is specified below. sd003 Sex of child. sd004 Relationship of child to respondent. sd005 Mortality status of child. sd006 Month of child's death. (only available for phone respondents) sd007 Year of child's death. (only available for phone respondents) sd008 Living arrangement of child. sd010 Highest grade of child's education. (only available for "mail only" respondents) sd014 Century month of child's birth. A similar table is available in the WLS Wave 2 data for children of 1992-1993 primary respondents. Variable names for the table in this wave match those in Wave 2 (except the first letter is S in this wave and R in Wave 2). Less information was collected for this wave of data. Thus some names from the numerical sequence are omitted in this table. The respondent was asked to list his/her children from oldest to youngest. If the respondent listed any children out-of-order, they were reordered for this table. Don't knows and refusals for birth year are at the end of the table. If only month is missing, it is imputed as 6. Consecutive missing values remain in the reported order. Information not collected is coded refused/ not ascertained. Some respondents reported the total number of children, but refused to give any details about these children. For those cases, all table entries for that total number of children are coded refused/ not ascertained and the remaining table entries are coded inappropriate. Some respondents refused to reveal any information regarding children (including number of children). These cases are coded refused/not ascertained for all variables in this module. If the telephone respondent had any children who were alive, were biological or adopted, and were 18 years or older; then one of these eligible children was randomly chosen as the "selected" child. No selected child was chosen for respondents of the mail only survey. Variables for this selected child are: sd003sk Sex of selected child. sd004sk Relationship of selected child to respondent. sd008sk Living arrangement of selected child. sd014sk Century month of selected child's birth. sd016sk Selected child's birth order. Additional information obtained about the selected child is in the XSKID module (variables sj001sk - sj006sk). Variable names from the mail only survey are proceeded by an "&" in the parenthesized list of variable names included with the variable description. NOTE: See APPENDIX D for Creation of Rosters. NOTE: See APPENDIX O - COR607, Century Months.
