Note: Codebooks contain frequency data from the private data release. For some variables, these differ from the frequencies in the public release. Phone: Children's Roster

The complete children's roster was collected in the following ways:

   - In the first roster, the 1975 respondents were asked to either confirm or
   correct the information we had about their children from the 1975 survey.

   - In the second roster, the 1975 respondents were asked about children 
   acquired since 1975.  This second roster also obtained information about 
   all children of 1975 nonrespondents.  

Information from both of these rosters was combined into one new table 
to create the complete children's roster and ordered by century month 
of birth, from oldest to youngest.  See Appendix D COR520 - Creation of 
Complete Children's Roster.

Don't knows and refusals for birth year are at the end of the table.  
If only month is missing, it is imputed as 6.  Consecutive missing 
values remain in the reported order.  

rd001kd         Total number of children reported in 1992-1993 interview.

Table entries, one of each for up to 14 children.  Last two digits indicate
the table number.  Only the prefix is specified below.

  rd003         Sex of child.
  rd004         Relationship of child to respondent.
  rd005         Mortality status of child.
  rd006         Month of child's death.
  rd007         Year of child's death.
  rd008         Living arrangement of child.
  rd009         Marital status of child.
  rd010         Highest grade or year of regular school that child ever
                attended.
  rd011         Did child complete this grade or year of school?
  rd012         Did child attend a regular school in the last 12 months?
  rd013         If attended regular school, does child live with respondent
                while attending school or while not attending school.
  rd014         Century month of child's birth.
  rd015         Child originally reported in 1975 interview?
 
During the 1975 interview one of the respondents children was randomly
chosen as the "selected" child.  We intended to ask about this same child
if he/she were still alive during the 1992-1993 interview.  However, due to
an error in the first version of the survey instrument, the "selected" child
was randomly chosen for groups 0 and 1 (GROUP91=0 or 1) for the nonsib sample
(XSTAT77=99).  Of course this randomly chosen child was sometimes the same
child as the 1975 selected child and sometimes he/she was different. Variable
RDB02SK indicates if a new child was selected and the reason for the new
selection.  

In 2004, the master data file was restructured so that data for all 
selected children who were newly chosen for any reason other than 
noninterview of R in a previous survey are no longer available in the master 
data set.  These variables are available in a separate file - newchild92, 
which is available upon request.  678 cases are in newchild92. Variable RDB02SK

is coded 4 (new child chosen due to death of 1975 selected child),5 (new child 
due to error in instrument) or 7 (2 cases, random error) for cases whose data 
for the newly selected 1993 child is only available in newchild92. Variables  
RD003SK - RD016SK of KROS and all the variables  in SKID (RJ001SK - RJ051SK) 
have been moved to newchild92 for children newly selected in 92.  Data in the 
master file for these variables is coded not ascertained for the 678 cases.

The selected child has one variable for each of the preceding with SK
as the suffix, plus the two additional variables:

  rd002sk       Is the selected child the same as in 1975?
  rd016sk       Selected child's birth order.

Additional information obtained about the selected child is in questions
rj001sk through rj051sk.

Seven respondents refused to reveal any information regarding
children.  Thus we do not know whether or not they have any children.
This cases are coded -3 as refused for all questions in this section.
