If Graduate Respondents lost both spouse and parents within 10 years but more than 6 months ago, we ask about spouse's death and do not ask about parents. If mother and father died during the period, we ask about the most recent parent's death. If mother and father died at the same time, we randomly assign which parent to ask. BRIEF VARIABLE DESCRIPTIONS GY201REC - GY207REC IDENTIFICATION VARIABLES GY208REC - GY218RE R’S FEELING ABOUT SPOUSE’S DEATH BETWEEN 6 MONTHS - 2YEARS GY219RE - GY234RE SITUATIONS ABOUT SPOUSE’S DEATH BETWEEN 6 MONTHS - 10 YEARS * GY226SP contains mis-classified cases due to coding errors; the variable has been archived and replaced by the corrected version, GY726SP. GY235SP - GY258RE CHANGES IN FINANCIAL SITUATION DUE TO DEATH OF SPOUSE GY401RE - GY414PA SITUATIONS ABOUT PARENT’S DEATH BETWEEN 6 MONTHS - 10 YEARS * GY408PA contains mis-classified cases due to coding errors; the variable has been archived and replaced by the corrected version, GY808PA. CODING PROBLEMS - End of life - Death of parents is based on two screening variables: >deadmom< and >deaddad<. Both variables should have value indicating whether R has to answer the section or not. There are 19 cases with both >deadmom< and >deaddad< are empty (.). >elive1< is variable indicating whether mother is alive or not. Among 19 with empty >deadmom<, 9 cases have their mother alive (elive = 1). This means that they don’t have to answer EOL-Death of parents section. There are 10 cases with their mother not being alive (elive1 = 2). There are 8 respondents whose mother died 10 years ago, and thus not being eligible to answer EOL - Death Section. There are two cases whose mother died within 10 years. They should have to be asked EOL-Death section, but didn’t. - In case of father, there are 17 caess with >elive2< = 2 and >deaddad< = (.). Among them, 12 cases experienced fathers’ death 10 years ago, and thus not being eligible for EOL-Death section. But 5 cases have their father’s death within 10 years and should have to answer EOL-Death section - New variables GY204REC and GY205REC are the copy of >deadmom< and >deaddad< respectively. I gave <0> "not dead during last 10 years" for those who have empty >deadmom< or >deaddad< but are not eligible for that section. And <-4> was given to those whose parent deceased within 10 years but did not answer EOL-Death section. - GY226SP (Who held your deceased spouse's Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care?) contains mis-classified cases due to coding errors; the variable has been archived and replaced by the corrected version, GY726SP. 4 cases were affected by the coding errors: GY226SP GY726SP Frequency ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3 - spouse and child(ren) 7 - sibling (gender unspec.) 2 6 - whole family 12 - physician/healthcare prof.) 1 8 - cousin (gender unspec.) 16 - Attorney/lawyer 1 All other cases have GY226SP=GY726SP. - GY408PA (Who held the Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care for your deceased parent?) contains mis-classified cases due to coding errors; the variable has been archived and replaced by the corrected version, GY808PA. 447 cases were affected by the coding errors: GY408PA GY808PA= Frequency ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 - spouse 32 - son 191 1 - sposue 52 - daughter 240 3 - spouse & child(ren) 75 - grandchild (gender unspec.) 2 5 - multiple siblings 10 - friend(s) 3 6 - whole family 12 - physician/healthcare prof. 3 8 - cousin (gender uns 16 - attorney/lawyer 8 All other cases have GY408PA=GY808PA.
