The categories are organized in two ways: (a) there are three groups of codes--the first pertaining to additional or supplemental forms of coverage received by the respondent, the second pertaining to R's current spouse, and the third corresponding to a former spouse; (b) within each group, the codes are listed (roughly) in decreasing order of detail. That is, the most specific responses are listed first, the last responses are less detailed, more vague, or simply "not specified." * It should be relatively easy to determine to which group a response belongs. In several instances, Rs specifically refer to an ex-husband or ex-spouse, to a pension that they will receive through a divorce settlement, or to "survivors' benefits" (i.e., a pension that a widow(er) receives from a former spouse's former employer). A spouse that is not specifically referred to as an "ex" or a "former spouse" can be assumed to be a current spouse. * Please code the responses as specifically as possible. In many instances, Rs will state that they have a 401k or a 403b; simply code the response as a 401k. Military pensions often are reported in a similarly precise fashion. * At a minimum, try to determine if the pension coverage mentioned is provided by an employer (or union) or by some independent effort on the part of the respondent. An example of the latter is an annuity purchased by the respondent or some other kind of investment not offered through the employer. Examples of employer- or union-sponsored coverage include "teachers retirement" or "municipal pension" or "pension coming from retail clerks union." * Please note that the employer/union category includes coverage sponsored by a former employer or union as well as supplemental or additional coverage from a current employer or union. Although the distinction between current and former is interesting and would have been wonderful to retain in our coding, this information simply is not available consistently and clearly. * The category "other, not specified" is reserved for cases: (a) where R could not or did not provide enough information to code the response more specifically (e.g., "don't know") or (b) the response is not represented by any of the more specific categories (e.g., "buying rental properties"). * Miscellaneous Notes (1) At least one R reported pension from TIAA-CREF. Code this as employer/union coverage. (2) Some Rs refer to tax-sheltered annuities as "tsa." (3) A few Rs talk about "SEPs" or "simplified employee pension plan." Code this as employer/union coverage. (4) Rs who mention "rolling over" pension or retirement plans should be coded as "personal investments." "Trust funds" should also be coded as personal investments. (5) An "annuity from an earlier employer plan" should be coded as an employer/union plan. An "annuity from insurance company" should be coded as a life insurance annuity. (6) "VA benefits" or "VA health benefits" should not be coded as a form of pension or retirement coverage. * Multiple Responses (1) In some cases, Rs will list several different kinds of additional or supplemental coverage: Code the first type of pension/retirement coverage mentioned. (2) R may provide information on pension coverage he/she has him/herself as well as a spouse's pension: When R provides information about two separate forms of pension or retirement coverage, one he/she receives directly and another through a current or former spouse, code the information pertaining to R.
