COMPUTER OPERATIONS REQUEST #612 Date: 1/22/96 Purpose: Update for WLS23_2.DAT (Wave 1 - 1957-77 2/96 release). A. Instructions to repair 1970-Basis Duncan and Siegel Scores in the data for the February 1996 release with corrections to errors in the original CORS 315 and COR521C. The code in COR612C replaces COR521C for the Wave 1 data only: the codes for major industry and major occupation are the same as those in COR521C with the exception of the missing data codes for DK and inapp. There are sixteen jobs (plus three best-measure variables) that are affected by this error. See MEMO122 for a description of these errors and COR613-613B for handling of the aspiration questions. B. Three major occupation variables have also been recoded (see COR612D for this code): OCMSPH had inconsistent treatment for missing data. All don't knows, inapps, and refused were coded 99s. This has been changed to 88 of inapps and 99 for don't know and refused. OCMR10 and XOCMR10 have information about self-employment and can be coded into the 17 category Major Occupational Groups using COR612C. NOTE:The first section of the data (cols. 210-412) contains occupations coded to 1950-Census basis codes and that are not affected by errors in COR315 and COR521C. Step A: Make an extract from WLS23U_1.DAT with the following variables: The following should have been coded to 1970-Census basis coding and will be affected by the errors discovered in COR315. 485 - Move the original "defective" variables to a section at the end of the file to be saved for replication only. These variables were created for all jobs which were coded to the 1970-Census based codes originally using COR315. The errors in this coding were discovered in December 1995 and are documented in MEMO122. The correct code is in COR612C and is used to create the revised versions of these variables. For variables which were updated for 1975 nonrespondents with 1992/93 data, the updated data are NOT moved to the end of the data file; that is, all 1975 nonrespondents have 999 codes for these variables in the replication section. The new, updated variables in Step C will contain the data for 1975 nonrespondents who were respondents in 1992/93. Remake this so that 88 is inap and 99 is refused/ not ascertained. OCMSPH will then be coded the same as other occupation category variables. 2 - OCMR10 and XOCMR10 - For both respondent's preferred job 10 years from now and siblings preferred job 10 years from now, a class of worker variable is available. This class of worker variable only distinguishes between work for others and work for someone else and self-employed. However, that is sufficient to use the 17 category major occupation. Currently the 12 category occupations are coded for these variables. (Use COR521C and code these variables to the 17 categories. COR521c should be modified so that inaps and don't knows are coded 88 rather than 97 and 98 to be consistent with WLS23 coding conventions for major occupations. COR612C WAS UPDATED TO INCORPORATE THESE CHANGES.) OCMSPH (col. 1554-1555), OCMR10 (col. 1461-1462) and XOCMR10 (col. 3140-3141) will replace the current versions of these variables in WLS23_2. The old versions will not be saved. See cor612d.sas for the program that writes the new variables.
