COR315D January 5, 1996 Re: Listing of SEI (Duncan) and prestige (Siegel) scores as originally used in coding 1975-77 WLS data into the Featherman, Sobel, Dickens "Total" updates for 1970-basis Census occupations This list is revised as of December 1995 to document the default coding of non-split occupation lines in 1975-77 data collected by the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study. In fact, only two occupational reports, OCASSK (detailed occupational aspiration for selected child) and OCEXSK (detailed occupational expectation for selected child) were coded using this list alone. All other occupations or occupational aspirations were mapped using splits on industry or class of worker within occupation for some occupation lines. (See COR315 (March 1979, and addenda and revisions), Memo 122, COR 521C, COR612, and COR 613 for additional information about coding of split lines.) The first column contains a 1970-basis Census occupation code. The second column is the Featherman, Sobel, Dickens (FSD) update of the Duncan SEI and the third column is the FSD update of the Siegel (NORC) Prestige score. In each case, the scores are based on weighted averages of 1960-basis scores and the composition of the total work force within each 1970-basis Census occupation line. In some cases, these mappings differ from those listed by Featherman, Sobel, and Dickens, either because FSD did not suggest scores for a given line (allocation codes 196, 246, 296, 396, 586, 696, 806, 846, 976, and former members of the Armed Forces 580), because the FSD scores were incorrect (796, 545, 551, 672, 711, 714, 962), or because a code listed by FSD was not used in the 1970 Census (775, 795, 805, 882). Note that two allocation codes from the 1970 Census (726, 986), which were not used in the original coding of the 1975-77 WLS data, are not included on this list. Moreover, the SEI and Prestige scores included on the list for allocation codes are not necessarily recommended. See Memo 122 for more information about this. The original coding of lines that were split by occupation, industry, or class of worker is documented in COR 315 (March 29, 1979), and the revised coding of 1970-basis occupation lines is documented in COR 521C (January 1996), COR 612 (January 1996), and COR 613 (January 1996).
