cor972.txt May 3, 2007 Errors in bmfaed and bmmaed plus solution In 1977, this code was used to create bmfaed. BMFAED: IF EDHHYR < 77 THEN COMPUTE BMFAED = EDHHYR ELSE COMPUTE BMFAED = EDFA57. bmfaed has a variable label of "best measure of head of household education" and is listed as best measure of head of household ed in web codebook. In the handbook, bmfaed is described as "best measure of father's education." In 1977, this code was used to create bmmaed BMMAED: IF EDMOYR, < 77 THEN COMPUTE BMMAED = EDMOYR ELSE COMPUTE BMMAED = EDMO57. best meause of mothers' education was taken from 1975 report if available and from 1957 report if not available from 1975. In 1975, ed questions are for head of household and then mother if mother is not the head of household. In 1957, separate questions for father and mother ed. Problem 1: Label on bmfaed is confusing. The way it is constructed, makes it fairly close to head of household education. Yet the name and handbook indicate it is father's education. *Solution: Create two separate variables: 1. Best measure head of household, bmhhed and 2. bmfaedu updated best measure of father's education. Problem 2: edfa57 was updated in 1983. Following is the descripion of that update: Education of Father. EDFA57 on SWL21 (condensed); SWL1A - col. 27 SWL21 and earlier tapes combined "did not attend high school", "not ascertained", and "do not know" as one variable and also combined "attended trade or business school" with "graduated from high school" as a single variable. COPY variable from SWL1A - col. 27 and VERIFY with April,1957 questionnaire UPDATEVAR = EDFA57Q NOTE: Use the coding currently used on the SWL21 tape with the addition of "13" for "trade or business school", and the codes 77 and 99 for do not know and N.A. Similarly for bmmaed (best measure mothers ed), edmo57 (mother's education from 1957 report) was updated to edmo57q in 1983; and that update was not made to bmmaed. *Solution: use the updated edfa57q to create updated version of bmfaedu; and for inclusion in bmhhed; and use the updated edmo57q to create bmmaedu (updated version of best meaure mother's education.) Archive bmfaed and bmmaed. Include details of these changes in an update notice. Prob 3. edhhyr and edmoyr were updated in 1995 with data from 1975 NR's. bmfaed and bmmaed were not updated with this new data. *Solution: These will be automatically included when bmfaedq, bmhhed, and bmmaedu recreated as soltuion to Problem 2.
