If you received first wave data (1957-77 Surveys) before March 13, 1996, please read this report.
The extract program WLSGV was updated in March 1996. This updated version of WLSGV MUST be used with the Wave 1 data released in March 1996. The December 1995 version of WLSGV must be used with all previous editions of Wave 1 data.
In order to use the March 1996 version of WLSGV, you will need to obtain both the new executable program for your system and an updated version of the .prg list for the Wave 1 data set. This .prg list is named wls23_2.prg. The previous list was named wls23_1.prg; both the contents of the list and the name of the list have changed for this update. The .prg lists for Wave 2 were not altered.
This March 1996 release of WLSGV also includes an improvement for the Wave 2 data. The previous release of WLSGV could result in incorrect results if the user selected more than 200 variables from the same data module.
IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE USER COPY THE MARCH 1996 EDITION OF THE WAVE 1 DATA AND THE MARCH 1996 UPDATE OF THE WLSGV PROGRAM.
The errors and corrections in the status and prestige variables are described in the new Appendix P to the Wave 1 data. This Appendix is available in machine-readable form and can be downloaded with the documentation for this 3/96 release of the Wave 1 data.
Among non-respondents to the 1975 survey who were respondents in 1992/93 (and whose SEI and Prestige scores were copied to the Wave 1 data for selected variables in the 11/95 WLS release of Wave 1) these errors are very serious. It would be unwise to rely upon any analyses using the affected variables and cases in the 11/95 WLS release.
1970 - Basis Duncan Status and Siegel Prestige Scores in the data for the 3/96 release have been corrected as described in Appendix P - MEMO122. Among respondents to the 1975 telephone survey, the effects of these errors are minor.
Because of the extensive use of the old, incorrect variables in published work, the old variables remain intact, but have been moved to the end of the analysis file. The new, updated SEI and Prestige variables have been inserted into the main part of the WLS23U_2.DAT file, and have a "U" appended to the end of the variable name.
Updates to SEI and Prestige scores on the WLS23_1 file for 1975 non-respondents with 1992/93 data have been removed from the old variables which moved to the end of the file. These scores were incorrect (see Appendix E for Wave 2). Correct, updated scores for 1975 nonrespondents have been made to the updated SEI and Prestige variables (those with the "U" appended to the end of the variable name.)

assigned in 1991. Those respondents
not known to be deceased by 1991 were

of the respondents during the course of the
1992/93 interview.)

The coding scheme was changed for OCMR10, occupational category for respondent's preferred job 10 years from now, and XOCMR10, occupational category for sibling's preferred job 10 years from now. Information about whether the respondent (or sibling) wished to work for self or someone else was collected in 1975 and 1977. Thus there is sufficient information to code these two variables (OCMR10 and XOCMR10) into the 17 category major occupational groups instead of the 12 occupational categories.
OCMR10 (col. 1461-1462) and XOCMR10 (col. 3140-3141) were replaced with the 17 category codes. The codes for these variables from WLS23_1 were not saved in WLS23_2.
OCMZ (col. 734-735) was updated for 1975 non-respondents with information obtained in the 1992/93 telephone survey.
1 Mail questionnaire and phone interview
completed
2 Mail questionnaire completed, no phone
interview completed
3 Mail questionnaire was sent to sibling, not
returned
4 No mail questionnaire was sent to sibling
The following note was added to the documentation for XSTAT93M:
In Wave 1 (1957-77) machine-readable codebook, the description for codes 04 and 05 were wrong. The descriptions of the sibling response status in 1977 were reversed. This has been corrected on the 3/96 release of WLS23U_2. The printed codebook has always been correct!
The following is the correct code.
