NOTE: New codes were assigned in the 3/96 release to distinguish
between those siblings who completed the phone and mail
interviews and those who only completed the mail interview.
NOTE: All siblings who were interviewed in 1977 and all siblings
of respondents who completed the telephone interview in
1992/93 were scheduled to be interviewed by telephone in
1993-1994. Addtionally, siblings who completed the
1993/94 telephone interview were to be sent a mail
questionnaire. Due to budget constraints, it was not
possible to complete all these interviews. Telephone
interviews were attempted for all those siblings who were
interviewed in 1977 (XSTAT77=1) and for all other siblings
from groups (GROUP91) 2-9 (if the respondent completed a
telephone interview in 1992/93). Mail questionnaires were
sent to the remaining 970 siblings from groups 0 and 1 (if
the respondent completed the telephone interview). These
mail questionnaires contained two additional pages
ascertaining information about marriage, current job,
children, birthdate, education and spouse's job. 559 of
these siblings returned the mail questionnaire
(XSTAT93M=2).
NOTE: For the 3/97 edition nine 1975 primary respondents who were also
selected siblings had their data carried over to the 1977 selected
sibling section. See Change Notice #6 for details.
51-51 LIV92 Is the primary respondent alive as of current
release as far as we know? (added 11/95;
updated in 3/97, 9/99, 9/00, 03/02, 02/2003.)
1 YES, RESPONDENT IS ALIVE 4451 4955
2 NO, RESPONDENT IS DECEASED 541 370
NOTE: We learned of some respondent deaths after they had
completed an interview. They are coded 2 for LIV92
and 1 for STAT92P.
NOTE: Anytime we learn of a respondent's death, the information
is added to LIV92 DEATYR and becomes available with the
next release of wave I data.
NOTE: See column 3696-3699 (DEATYR) for year of death.

NOTE: Before using the IQ variables, it is recommended that you
read Appendix D - Memo124 for Respondent IQ data - updates
and recommendations and COR652 for Construction of "new" IQ
variables.
NOTE: See columns 3934-3983 for updated/additional IQ variables
for the graduate. They were added for the release in 3/98.
NOTE: GWIIQ_BM (columns 3980-3982) Best Measure of IQ score mapped
from raw Henmon-Nelson test score--WLS Graduate (added 3/98)
is the measure of IQ to use if only one measure is to be used
for WLS Graduates. Prior to 3/98 IQHNQ and IQHNSCRQ were the
"best measures" for intelligence.
The other variables (IQ and IQSCOR) were used for all
publications prior to 1983. The remaining IQ
variables were collected in 1983 for 2438 individuals whose
siblings were selected for the 1977 sibling survey. These
are excellent measures for this subsample and these data
are included in the recommended best measures.
63-65 IQHNQ IQ-Henmon-Nelson Centile Rank (1957Q) updated
version of IQ. See columns 3934-3983 for updated/
additional IQ variables for the graduate. This
variable contains IQJCR if available else the recoded
(1983) value from the original 1957
questionnaires-Recoded and added 1/83.
If Henmon-Nelson Score
was missing from the original 1957
questionnaire, then IQHNQ = IQ. See IQSOURCE
(col. 2138) for source flag. See Appendix G for
difference between this and other IQ variables.
See IQHNSCRQ for IQHNQ-Normalized.

See Appendix D and G for difference between this
and IQHNQ. See also IQSCOR for IQ-Normalized.

NOTE: There are actually legal codes of 100 for this variable.
Code 99 = 99 or 100.
NOTE: The Henmon-Nelson scores written on the 1957 questionnaires
are junior Henmon-Nelson scores. Missing data for the IQ
variables -- IQ, IQNLNR (dropped from master file in 1/83),
and IQSCOR were filled in with any score that could be
found. (This included Henmon-Nelson Scores from other
years, conversions of other scores reported in the
Wisconsin State Testing booklets and conversions of test
scores requested from the schools by Professor Sewell in
7/62 and 10/66.)

1957 QUESTIONNAIRE DATA-RECODED IN 1982
The following variables in columns 101-186 were added to the file
1/83. These are recoded versions of variables from the original
April, 1957 Questionnaire of Wisconsin High School Seniors
(col.101-147) and from a supplementary questionnaire mailed to the
parents of Professor Little's original 1/6 sample in October, 1957
(cols. 148-186). All recoded variables or those coded for the first
time for this update have variable names which end in "Q". Some of
the questions on the April, 1957 questionnaire were coded for the
earliest files but the variables were not carried forward on the
master files. This section appears for the first time in 1983.
See Appendix G - COR336at3 for details.
NOTE: 126 of the April, 1957 questionnaires reappeared after the
completion of the 1983 recoding of these questionnaires.
These questionnaires have not be recoded and added to the
master file but we hope to code and add these data if we
obtain additional funding.
