SPSS Subsets and Merges

An intermediate data manipulation topic, we often find we want to work with just some data, or we need to combine data from multiple files for a single analysis.

A subset can be just selected variables, just selected observations, or some combination of both. We look at subsets of observations based on data values, observation number, or random subsets. We consider temporary and permanent subsets, as well.

Conversely, we can merge distinct sets of observations, or distinct sets of variables. When merging sets of variables, we typically want to match observations, perhaps one-to-one, sometimes many-to-one. Finally, we have to consider how data are updated or not when variables clash.
