All
of these applications will run directly in your
web browser with no need to install anything.
Most require a fairly modern browser. Note that
MindTerm connects to HAL, but once there you
can connect to any other server by typing
ssh servername (for example
ssh kite).
We recommend using Thunderbird,
Outlook Express, or
Pine for email,and SecureCRT
or X-Win32 for connecting
to Linux servers. All are available without charge
to UW faculty, staff, and students. Web-based
tools for these purposes are convenient and can
be used anywhere, but will not give you the same
features or performance as a dedicated program.
(Note that the terminal server web interface
will assist you in installing a dedicated client
program.)
