========================== SSCC News, October, 1996 ========================== This is the SSCC News. This monthly electronic newsletter will keep you informed about recent changes on the SSCC computer networks. We hope this information will help improve communication between the SSCC computing staff and all of you computer users out there. Inside this issue... New Public Terminal Room in 7413 Social Science New Software on UNIX for Translating Data: DBMS/COPY New Version of F-Prot Available for Downloading Ultrix Computers Retired SSCC Training Schedule Other Training Available on Campus The Revision Control System on UNIX Reminder about the TECHNEWS-STUDENTS LISTSERV ----------------------------------------------- New Public Terminal Room in 7413 Social Science ----------------------------------------------- SSCC members have a new terminal room in 7413 Social Science. This space was contributed by SSRI when they joined the SSCC in July. The room has six X-terminals and we are awaiting the arrival of a networked printer. The same door access system that is installed in the terminal room in 2470 is installed in 7413. Users who are authorized for 2470 are automatically authorized for 7413. ---------------------------------------------------- New Software on UNIX for Translating Data: DBMS/COPY ---------------------------------------------------- DBMS/COPY is now available on UNIX (NORMAN only). DBMS/COPY translates data from one software package to another. For example, DBMS/COPY can read and write SAS, STATA, and SPSS data sets. For more information, pick up a copy of SSCC Pub. #7-13, "Using DBMS/COPY on UNIX" available from the consultant, from either terminal room, or online in SSCGOPHER. Recall that similar software, STAT/TRANSFER, is available on our PC LAN. ---------------------------------------------- New Version of F-Prot Available for Downloading ---------------------------------------------- New versions of F-Prot (antivirus software) are available for downloading for PC users on the network: \\ssc-master\os\windows\F-Prot \\ssc-master\os\winnt\F-Prot \\ssc-master\os\win95\F-Prot Contact the consultant if you need assistance. ------------------------ Ultrix Computers Retired ------------------------ The remaining two Ultrix computers, EUNICE and CDE2, were retired earlier this week. If you normally logged in to one of these two computers you should now log in to one of our three Digital UNIX computers (NORMAN, ELAINE, or WINGRA) or our SunOS computer, CDE2S. NORMAN is a public machine available to any SSCC member. ELAINE is for Sociology affiliates, WINGRA is for IRP affiliates, and CDE2S is for CDE affiliates. ---------------------- SSCC Training Schedule ---------------------- Note: All SSCC training sessions require preregistration. If at least five people have not preregistered for a course one week prior to its start date, the class may be canceled. To preregister for a class, send mail to SSCCLASS indicating which class(es) you plan to attend. You will be reminded about your preregistration through e-mail a day or two before the class begins. If no training session is offered for a topic you are interested in, please send mail to SSCCLASS requesting a session. We will schedule a session if a minimum of five people request training on a topic. To view them from this BULLETIN entry, press Return and then pick "2. Other Information Servers", then pick "1. sscgopher", and then pick "4. SSCC Classes". ---------------------------------- Other Training Available on Campus ---------------------------------- There are other departments on campus with training programs you might want to consider. Learning Support Services (LSS) offers free microcomputer workshops to faculty and staff. Besides Windows and WordPerfect classes, they offer a class on HTML for Homepage construction. For more information, call 263-5000. DoIT offers a wide range of workshops as well although they charge for many of their workshops. For more information, call 262-3605. UW Libraries offer free workshops on bibliographic database management systems and Internet topics such as Netscape and HTML. For more information, call 262-4308. Workshop schedules for all three departments are posted on SSCC's bulletin board between 4406 and 4408 Social Science. ----------------------------------- The Revision Control System on UNIX ----------------------------------- UNIX has a system for managing revisions of files called the Revision Control System, or RCS. RCS automates the storing, retrieval, logging, identification, and merging of file revisions. For SSCC users, RCS is an excellent system for managing changes to SAS, Stata, and SPSS programs. For more information, pick up a copy of SSCC Pub. #7-14, "Using the Revision Control System" available from the consultant, from either terminal room, or online in SSCGOPHER. --------------------------------------------- Reminder about the TECHNEWS-STUDENTS LISTSERV --------------------------------------------- DoIT manages a LISTSERV called TECHNEWS-STUDENTS whose purpose is to keep students informed about computing at UW. A couple of times each month subscribers receive an email with brief news about WiscWorld upgrades, dial-in tips, training classes, and much more. To join the LISTSERV, email the message: subscribe technews-students (your name) to the email address: listserver@relay.doit.wisc.edu. Leave the subject line blank.
