Windows NT Print Queue Names Changing SSCC Summer Training Schedule Summer Training Opportunities at Learning Support Services (LSS) VMS (EAGLE) Phase Out Deadlines Approaching Protect Your PC Against Computer Viruses Running Jobs on UNIX (Nicely) Who You Gonna Call? ------------------------------------- Windows NT Print Queue Names Changing ------------------------------------- Effective Friday May 7th, all Windows NT Print Queue names will change requiring all PC and Wincenter users to redefine their network printers. print will serve all network printers--a job currently handled by SSC-MASTER and SSCWINNT1. This transition should be relatively smooth provided the new share name/queue name is used. Please reference the chart below listing the PUBLIC printers available. Private network printers in various offices are also affected by this change. Signs will be posted on the printers with new share names to be used. NOTES: 1) Because PUBLIC network printers are and will continue to be automatically setup for you when logging into Wincenter, you only need to redefine private printers you may connect to. 2) Print Queues on SSC-MASTER and SSCWINNT1 will remain until May 26th to ease this transition. 3) Windows 3.1x users should contact the consultant for assistance. ----------------------------- SSCC Summer Training Schedule ----------------------------- This summer we will again be concentrating our training efforts on transitioning VMSers, whether it be to networked PCs, UNIX, or a combination of both. All SSCC training sessions require preregistration. To preregister for a class, either send mail to SSCCLASS indicating which class(es) you plan to attend or register through SSCC's web page form (www.ssc.wisc.edu/Sscc/Training/trainreg.htm). You will be reminded about your preregistration through e-mail a day or two before the class begins. Keep these important dates in mind: o August 24: E-mail services no longer available. Before this deadline you need to transfer your mail to UNIX and either learn a UNIX mailer or (preferably) learn a PC mailer. Schedule an appointment with Consultant to make this transfer. o October 31: Statistical software no longer available (SAS and SPSS system files must be transferred to UNIX in portable format or files will no longer be readable). Schedule an appointment with Nancy McDermott if you need assistance with this transfer. o December 30: VMS Operating System no longer available. Make sure all the VMS files you want to keep are transferred to your UNIX account, your space on SSCC's Microsoft network (U: drive), or a local drive on your PC. SSCC staff would like to help you with the transition off VMS. You can set up an appointment with Consultant and we will work through this transition with you. (Just don't wait until the last minute!) ---------------------------------------- Protect Your PC Against Computer Viruses ---------------------------------------- Computer viruses are on the rise. This spring alone we have at least heard about (and sometimes have had to deal with) viruses like "Melissa", "Happy99", and "Chernobyl". Anyone with a PC should have UP-TO-DATE antivirus software running. "UP-TO-DATE" needs to emphasized because antivirus software needs to be updated regularly in order to protect your PC from the latest viruses. UW-Madison has a campus site license for Command AntiVirus that is available free to any SSCC member. If your PC is in the Social Science Building and you are logging into the PRIMO domain, you can take advantage of the SSCC's automatic Command AntiVirus installation. This will install the latest version of Command AntiVirus on your computer and configure it to work on the SSCC's network. When new upgrades and virus definitions are released, your computer will be automatically updated. For installation instructions visit https://www.ssc.wisc.edu/Sscc/antivirus.htm. If your PC is not in the Social Sciences Building, you can still download and install Command AntiVirus. There is no way to automatically update your Command AntiVirus software though, so you will need to download the updates. The most important thing that you will want to keep updated are the definition files (.def). These allow your software to find and protect you from even the newest viruses. Visit http://www.uwex.edu/software/uw-only/f-prot/ to download Command Antivirus and get the latest version and def files. If you are running antivirus software and want to check and make sure the software is up-to-date, go to the program's Help menu and choose "About antivirus_software_name" and check that the program has been updated at least some time in the last three months. In the case of Command Antivirus, the current version is dated 3/24/99 and corresponding definition files should be dated as late as 4/11/99. ----------------------------- Running Jobs on UNIX (Nicely) ----------------------------- Unlike VMS where there are many quotas associated with a user's process which can protect the system's over-all performance, UNIX allows a user (potentially) unlimited resources. Because it is easy for a single user to inadvertently use up a computer's resources, we depend on the good citizenship of all users in maintaining good system performance. So what can you do to help? There are two simple commands you can use when you start up a job that can make a significant difference. First, prefix your command with "nice". For example: nice sas bigjob & The "nice" command executes commands at a lower priority, allowing other jobs more computer time. Second, use the "at" command to run jobs during off peak hours. For example: > at 2am sas bigjob ^d For more information on "nice", "at", and other strategies for running large jobs, obtain a copy of "Research Computing on SSCC UNIX Systems" available from Consultant, either Public Terminal Room, or on-line at https://www.ssc.wisc.edu/Sscc/Pubs/PDF/research2.pdf. ------------------- Who You Gonna Call? ------------------- It's 9:00 p.m. Your paper is due tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. The SSCC computers just went down! SSCC staff and student operators are long gone for the day. Who you gonna call??? Suddenly you remember! The SSCC has a voice mail box for reporting system and network failures during weekends and evening hours when staff or operators are not in the building. Dial 262-4975 to report problems. After you leave a message, an on-call staff person will be paged automatically. This system is for reporting after-hours UNIX, VMS, or network failures only. It is not an extension of the SSCC's consulting service. Sorry, guys, but things like PC hangs, SAS errors, printer jams, etc. don't qualify as emergencies. Recall that SSCC Consulting hours are Monday - Friday 9-12, 1-4. Operator hours are 9-6 weekdays and 12-4 weekends.
