======================== SSC News, June, 1995 ======================== This is the SSC News. This monthly electronic newsletter will keep you informed about recent changes on the SSC computer networks. We hope this information will help improve communication between the SSC computing staff and all of you computer users out there. Inside this issue... Changes in the Network LSS PC Workshop Schedule SSC Publications Announcements ---------------------- Changes in the Network ---------------------- As part of the plan for continual improvements to the network, we are moving all Unix and VMS computers and all PC's to the campus 144 FDDI network. This network is faster and better managed than the 128 Ethernet network. To make this change, some SSC machines will be unavailable for brief periods of time. Some of your PC's may have to be modified to work on this network. A schedule will be put in bulletin (with an announcement in BROADCAST) in the near future listing when machines will be unavailable. If you have any questions, please contact the Consultant. The main problem this change in the network may cause will be that any "hard coded" references to 128.104.110.XXX will no longer work. So, any users with addresses of this type coded into command files (or Unix scripts) or incorporated into VMS symbols or Unix environment variables, will need to change them. We have a utility program called SSCIP on VMS which lists the IP numbers of all VMS and Unix computers. The new addresses will be recorded there as soon as they are changed. Some examples of using SSCIP follow: $ sscip vms #Lists the IP number for each VMS machine $ sscip ultrix #Lists the IP number for each ULTRIX machine $ sscip osf #Lists the IP number for each OSF machine $ sscip sunos #Lists the IP number for each SunOS machine $ sscip ssc #Lists the IP number for each VMS and UNIX machine $ sscip #Lists the IP number for the node specified Also, we will post the new IP numbers in bulletin before the addresses become effective. ------------------------ LSS PC Workshop Schedule ------------------------ L&S Learning Support Services (LSS), a learning resource department serving Letters & Science faculty, staff, TAs, PAs, and RAs, is offering a number of workshops this summer.
