This monthly electronic newsletter will keep you informed about recent changes on the SSC computer networks. We hope this information will help improve communication between the SSC computing staff and all of you computer users out there. --------------------------------------------- Public Terminal Room to be Closed for Prelims --------------------------------------------- The public terminal room (Soc. Sci. 2470) will be closed for students taking prelims from 8:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. on the following dates: August 18, 19, 20, 23, 27. Consulting will still be available but via e-mail only. ---------------------------------------------------- Office in Public Terminal Room Available for Reserve ---------------------------------------------------- T.A.'s and instructors of classes using instructional accounts, it is time to reserve the consulting office in the public terminal room (Soc. Sci. 2470) for holding office hours. As was announced in SSCNEWS in May, the consulting office (not the entire terminal room) is now available for reserve by instructors or teaching assistants to hold office hours (during times when no consultant is on duty) to provide support to students who use the SSC computers as part of their class work. The office is available between 8-10am or 3-5pm, Monday through Friday. Please contact Nancy McDermott (send mail to mcdermott or call 262-3206) to reserve the room. ----------------- SSC Staff Changes ----------------- Both Dan Popowich and Bruce Ruzicka have resigned from their positions at the SSC Co-op. We are trying to replace Dan as soon as possible. Bruce's job was restructured and we are going to have an opening soon for an associate VMS systems administrator. The good news is that Dixie Lang, who has been a half-time project assistant for the Co-op for almost a year now, has joined us full-time as an MIS II. --------------------------------------------------------- Dan Popowich's Intro to UNIX Class Available on Videotape --------------------------------------------------------- Even though Dan has left us, you can still see his smiling face on videotape! All eight sessions of the last Introduction to UNIX class were videotaped and you are welcome to borrow them. Drop by the consulting office in Soc. Sci. 2470 to pick up the tapes. You may borrow up to two tapes (each tape has one two-hour session) at a time and keep them for two days. -------------------- New SSC publications -------------------- The following new publications are available for SSC users: Mail on UNIX (SSC Pub.#7-2) Example of a LOGIN.COM (SSC Pub.#1-7) How to Log In to and Log Out from SSC Computers (How-to #16) How to Customize EMACS with the .emacs Initialization File (How-to #17) SSC publications are available in the racks in the public terminal room, Soc. Sci. 2470. You can browse through all the "How-to" publications in a ring binder on top of the rack, then ask the Consultant for a copy of the one(s) you want. ----------------------------------- News Server Temporarily Unavailable ----------------------------------- You may have noticed that the news server is no longer functioning. We have had continual problems with it and have decided to discontinue it until we can access the news server as a client of MACC's news server. This should happen sometime this fall. Meanwhile, you can still access your favorite news groups through gopher. Choose "Other Information Sources" from the main menu. Then choose "Usenet News" from the next menu and "Threaded (Tin)" from the menu after that. This menu can get you to many different news groups by choosing any of the menu items. For example, to get to most of the listserver news groups, choose "Bit". Once you locate a news group you would like to read regularly, place a bookmark at its menu pick and then you can return to it easily. If you need help using bookmarks or any other feature while in gopher, just press "?" followed by the Return key. ------------------------------ WHOIS on VMS Renamed SSCWHO ------------------------------ WHOIS on VMS has been renamed SSCWHO (see the June issue of SSCNEWS for the original announcement). The utility now has the same name on both VMS and UNIX. TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS NEWSLETTER, just reply to this mail message indicating you want to unsubscribe. We will remove you from the distribution list for future electronic mailings. If you ever change your mind, just notify the SSC Consultant or send mail to SSCNEWS asking to get back on the list.
