APL Mission

We provide the best demographic and economic data available. We will work with our clients to determine the precise information, quickly, at a reasonable cost, and in the format most useful for them.

Who We Are

The Applied Population Laboratory (APL) is a group of research and outreach professionals, within the University of Wisconsin - Madison , dedicated to providing the best demographic and economic data available. Each year, we provide information solutions to thousands of individuals and organizations. At the Applied Population Laboratory, we will work with you to determine the precise information you're looking for and provide it to you quickly, at a reasonable cost, and in the format most useful to you. If we don't have the data you need, we will refer you to a source that does.

In addition to consulting and direct client service, we issue published reports, give presentations to groups of all sizes, offer continuing education programs, provide instruction and training to university students, provide on-line access to data, and conduct research on current demographic and economic topics.

Established thirty years ago, the Applied Population Laboratory is located in the Department of Rural Sociology in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Wisconsin State Data Center

In addition to its University affiliations, APL acts as the coordinating agency of the Wisconsin State Data Center (WSDC), the name given to a cooperative venture among the U.S. Bureau of the Census, the Applied Population Laboratory, the Demographic Services Center in the Wisconsin Department of Administration, and 39 affiliate organizations statewide.

Created in 1979, the WSDC provides an effective vehicle for the distribution and use of census data at the local level. The WSDC provides contract services, publishes a quarterly newsletter, and offers training in access and use of population information.

Wisconsin Business/Industry Data Center

The Applied Population Laboratory also serves as lead agency of the Wisconsin Business/Industry Data Center (BIDC). Like the WSDC, the BIDC represents a cooperative effort among the Census Bureau, APL, the Demographic Services Center , and 37 affiliate organizations statewide. Formed in 1988, the BIDC functions to improve the dissemination and use of economic data produced by federal and state government agencies. The BIDC provides contract services, published periodic reports, and offers seminars and workshops on economic information and its utility.
