Frequently Asked Questions
How will my confidentiality be protected?
If you complete the survey online, your answers will be immediately entered into the database. Any contact information that you have provided the researchers will be destroyed once the survey portion of the study is completed, unless you would like to be contacted for an interview. If you indicate a desire to be contacted for an interview, your contact information will be stored separately from your survey data and will be saved only as long as necessary to schedule and complete an interview.
Access to this site is controlled by passwords. Further, the server on which the data is stored is protected by state-of-the-art firewalls. For more information, please contact the researchers.
Why does my spouse need to participate?
One of the weaknesses of the existing research on monogamy is that this research has primarily looked at individuals rather than couples. We are interested in both spouses’ perceptions of their marital arrangements. It is not uncommon for each spouse to have a different perception of some aspects of the relationship; it is thus essential that we ask each spouse the questions on our survey, rather than asking you to guess what your partner thinks.
If we do not receive completed surveys from both spouses, we will be unable to use the information that you have provided us.
Can I return to the survey if I decide not to finish it in one sitting?
Yes. You will not be able to backtrack and change your answers once you hit the “continue” button, but should you need to stop and return to the survey later, your password will allow you to do so.
