Akin, John S, David K. Guilkey, Barry M. Popkin, and Karen M. Smith. 1985. "The Impact of Federal Transfer Programs on the Nutrient Intake of Elderly Individuals." Journal of Human Resources 20(3):383-404.
In this paper we analyze the determinants of elderly nutrient intake. Our focus is on the impact of food assistance and income transfer programs, particularly the Food Stamp Program (FSP). Our statistical analysis is of a model with endogenous FSP participation and nutrient intake decisions. The insights gained regarding the effects on the behavior of the elderly caused by interactions among FSP, Supplemental Security Income, Social Security, and elderly feeding programs should prove useful in designing future transfer policies.
