Folger, John K. 1967. "The Balance between Supply and Demand for College Graduates." Journal of Human Resources 2(2):143-175.

Mr. Folger examines projections of the supply of Bachelor's and Doctoral graduates to see if fiscal or other restraints are likely to limit the expansion of graduate or undergraduate degree output. Demands for college graduates in elementary and secondary teaching, and in all other occupations combined, are compared with projected graduates; these comparisons suggest that supply is likely to be more than adequate to meet demand in the next decade. Demands for Doctorates in teaching, research, and all other occupations combined are compared with projected supply; a much more adequate supply is projected for the 1970-75 period. Implications of these comparisons are discussed.

Mr. Trow, among other comments, suggests that the demand projections presented are too conservative. Mrs. Rivlin questions whether the projections will have, or should have, any effect upon policy-making.

Mr. Folger is Director of the Commission on Human Resources and Advanced Education. Mr. Trow is at the Department of Sociology of the University of California, Berkeley. Mrs. Rivlin is Deputy Assistant Secretary for Program Coordination of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. This paper is part of the work of the Commission on Human Resources and Advanced Education which is supported by grants from the Carnegie Corporation and the Russell Sage Foundation.
