The Visiting Scholars ProgramThe Havens Center runs a graduate seminar each semester in conjunction with its Visiting Scholars Program under the auspices of the Sociology Department.Through the Visiting Scholars Program leading critical theorists from around the world are brought to the University to offer a series of lectures and seminars for a one to two week period. Each Visiting Scholar who is here for a week or more leads one seminar a week for graduate students and faculty, in addition to delivering public lectures. The seminars are based on attendance at the lectures and a reading packet which the visitor provides. Graduate students can earn credit by attending the lectures and seminars and can take the course s/u or for a grade. The seminar is organized very flexibly, so students can take from one to three credits in a term. Students may decide at any point which lecture and seminar series to attend for credit, and it is possible to register for credits at any point in the semester. A student can earn one credit by attending all lectures and seminars in a two week visit or by attending all of the events during two one week visits. By attending the lectures, doing the reading, and attending the seminar a student earns s/u credit. By doing that work and writing a short critique of the readings a student earns credit with a letter grade. Written work for Sociology 994 should be given to the Visiting Scholar during the visit, and copies should go to Professor Erik Wright by the last week of the semester. Students may wish to pair visits thematically to compile several credits or simply earn credit for those visits which they find most interesting. A copy of the reading packet for each visitor is kept on reserve in the Social Science Library (8432 Social Science Building) under the course number SOC 994 with Professor Erik Wright. Each packet is placed on reserve 7-10 days before the visit. For more information about Sociology 994 call the Havens Center at 262-1420 (room 8117) or Erik Wright at 262-0068 or 255-6454 (room 8112).
