Declaring the Major

To declare a major in Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, you need to meet or exceed the following criteria:

  1. Completion of at least two economics courses here on the UW-Madison campus
  2. GPA of at least 2.0 in all completed economics work, including any calculus and statistics requirements completed.
  3. GPA of at least 2.0 in any completed upper-level economics work.
  4. Effective Fall 2013, completion of a calculus course will be required to declare the major

Once you meet these requirements, you may come to the Economics Undergraduate Office (7238 Sewell Social SciencesBuilding) and fill out the Declaration Form. Your DARS will be checked to validate the above criteria, after which it will be sent to the Registrar’s Office (if you are in the College of Letters and Science) or, if you are in another College, returned to you for submission to that administrative office. Your major should be declared at the end of your Sophomore year. Later declarations may necessitate extending your academic career beyond 4 years.

Once your major is official and shows up on your DARS, you will gain the ability to schedule appointments with your Economics Advisor online via MyUW's WiscCal appointment feature. We strongly urge you to make an appointment to go over your DARS and your course of study within a month of your major being recorded.
