The University of Wisconsin is located on the shore of Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisconsin. Madison is built around five lakes, and, including surrounding communities, has a population of about 400,000 people. As the state capital, it is well-known for political, cultural and recreational opportunities. Madison is located 90 minutes from Milwaukee and less than 3 hours from Chicago. The University of Wisconsin's Madison campus has an enrollment of over 40,000 students. The campus contains library facilities that include over 5.9 million volumes. In addition, there are more than 4 million microfilm items and hundreds of thousands of government documents, maps, musical scores, audiovisual materials and other items housed in libraries across campus. The libraries also have extensive periodical collections. In addition, users can search 30 million citations in journal and information databases.
