Graduate Student Life

Despite the competitive nature of our program, there exists a spirit of camaraderie amongst our students. Study groups for course work and preliminary examinations are standard. Students contribute to intellectual life in the department by organizing a summer seminar series, in which students meet weekly to present and discuss preliminary research. The J.R. Commons Club, our graduate student association, brings in speakers to lecture on contemporary economic issues.

The department makes a special effort to promote close contact between students and faculty. Each incoming student is assigned a faculty advisor. From the second year on, students attend weekly seminars at which faculty and students present their research. Faculty cooperate with students in applying for departmental and university awards, and pursue prestigious outside funding opportunities. The department also provides some funds for students to present research at professional meetings or academic conferences. To further promote student-faculty interaction, the department and students organize several social events throughout the year. Most popular of these are the annual skit party in December, and the Fall and Spring Department picnics.
