The Campus and Surrounding Community

Stretching along the shore of Lake Mendota, the Madison campus is one of the loveliest anywhere, boasting a rich architectural history and an abundance of gardens and parks. Along with the 1,280 acre arboretum, its walking and biking trails offer an opportunity for relaxation after a hard day of work.

Also on the mall is the Overture Center for the Arts which, along with the University Student Unions, provides Madison and campus residents with music, theater and dance performances from local and national artists. The State Capitol is nestled on an isthmus between two glacial lakes, Monona and Mendota, and the downtown area offers lake views from nearly every angle. From May to October, an open air market around the State Capitol offers the opportunity to purchase fresh fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers directly from the grower.

On campus the School of Music and the Department of Theater and Drama sponsor concerts, operas, and plays and there are ongoing lectures on a variety of subjects. Two student unions further enrich campus life by offering concerts, plays, movies and specialty courses, and providing equipment and lessons for sports such as sailing, canoeing and skiing. Recreational facilities on campus abound, and include tennis, squash and racquetball courts, swimming pools, indoor track facilities, and a golf course. For sports fans, the University provides students with the opportunity to watch first-rate collegiate football, basketball, hockey, soccer, and rowing. Southwestern Wisconsin, with its rolling hills, lakes and rivers also accommodates students who enjoy hiking or fishing.

Other popular activities in Madison include Concerts on the Square in the summer, outdoor Shakespeare by the American Players Theatre in nearby Spring Green (also the residence of the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright), and the Winter and Summer Wisconsin Olympic Games.
