Application Checklist
- After you complete and submit your online application with the Graduate School, you will automatically receive an email from the Graduate School with your ID number. You will need your ID number to access your own personalized web address in OASIS (online application information system). Please save that e-mail message for future reference.
- If after a week you have not received the email from the Graduate School, first check your spam/junk mail. If it's not there, contact the Graduate School at gradadmiss@grad.wisc.edu
- Application fee payment: The Graduate School application fee must be received (not postmarked) by December 5 to be considered for funding. The final admissions deadline is February 1.
2. Submit the materials required for the Economics PhD Supplemental Application, which will become available through the Graduate School Electronic Application Website after you have completed step 1 (above).
Please note that all uploaded documents need to first be converted to PDF format.
- Statement of Purpose: Please upload the statement of purpose in PDF format.
- Transcripts: Please upload scanned PDF copies of your academic transcripts from all your degree-granting institutions and any other institution where you have been enrolled. In addition, mail one copy of your official transcripts to the following address. The transcript uploaded needs to match the transcript mailed:
Graduate Admissions and Aid Committee
Department of Economics
University of Wisconsin - Madison
7239 Social Science Building
1180 Observatory Drive
Madison, WI 53706-1393
- Writing Sample: All applicants must submit a writing sample in English. The writing sample can be a research paper or an article demonstrating your ability to do research and present your research in a written form. Please upload your writing sample in PDF format.
- Other materials: If you would like, please upload a copy of your resume or CV. This is optional.
- Note: Save often and press the “Final submit” button when all documents have been uploaded. You will not be able to make changes to your uploaded documents or upload new documents after you hit the final submit button. If you need to update or add an item after you hit the final submit button, please contact us at: gradpro@ssc.wisc.edu
A note on transcripts:
- One official transcript or academic record must be submitted to the Department of Economics from each degree-granting institution attended for all undergraduate and graduate courses you have taken.
- Transcripts must be uploaded and received by December 31 to be considered for funding.
- International academic records must be in the original language accompanied by an official English translation. Your school should provide an official translation of your documents; otherwise have a translation done by your school or an official translator. In some countries these people are also notaries. Do not submit an evaluation from a credential evaluation service in lieu of a translation.
- Please do not send or upload high school transcripts.
3. Three letters of recommendation: Letters must be submitted electronically by your recommenders no later than December 31. Please do NOT send paper letters by mail
4. Have ETS send your TOEFL scores or EILTS (if required) and GRE scores to the Graduate School.
- GMAT scores will not be accepted in place of GRE scores. The UW-Madison institutional and department code is 1846.
- It is very important you use the same name and spelling on the application as you used on the test form to avoid any delays on the arrival of scores on you file.
- The format of the date of birth is very important too. Please use month/day/year to avoid delays.
- TOEFL scores or EILTS are accepted if they are within two years of the start of the admission term.
- GRE scores are accepted if they are within five years of the start of the admission term.
Note: More information regarding the TOEFL requirement, the online application, fee information, and Graduate School FAQs (frequently asked questions) is available at the Graduate School admissions page. Follow this link to see if you are exempt from the TOEFL requirement.
5. Re-applicants: If you previously applied (within the past two years) and would like some of your previously submitted materials used for your application, please contact us via email at: gradpro@ssc.wisc.edu
