GIVING BACK

Sarah Dobrofsky, 2014 recipient of the Audrey J. Harris Summer Internship Award, interned at the Wisconsin Department of Justice - Criminal Litigation Unit.

Majors: Legal Studies and Political Science with a Certificate in Criminal Justice

Goals: To attend law school and pursue a legal career

This summer I had the opportunity to intern at the Wisconsin Department of Justice in the Criminal Litigation Unit. The Criminal Litigation Unit is composed of the Assistant Attorney Generals, whose responsibilities include prosecuting criminal offenses, extensive sexual predator obligations, and providing training to all prosecutors and law enforcement officials across the state. Furthermore, the Assistant Attorney Generals in the Criminal Litigation Unit work as special prosecutors for complex cases referred to them by District Attorneys throughout the state that require additional assistance and access to greater resources.

My experience at the DOJ-Criminal Litigation Unit was incredibly informative and rewarding. As an intern, I assisted the state prosecutors with their caseload by performing legal research and drafting documentation. I also had the opportunity to immerse myself in many facets of the criminal justice system, and was able to observe a variety of court proceedings including initial appearances, trials, and sentencing hearings. Another highlight of my internship experience was attending a series of Wisconsin judicial council meetings in the Capitol building regarding reforming current laws that govern criminal procedure in the state of Wisconsin.

I am honored to be among the recipients of the Audrey J. Harris Award. I would like to sincerely thank the family of Audrey J. Harris for the generous gesture that helps enable students to gain experience working in the criminal justice system in a hands-on internship setting that is truly unique and unparalleled. I hope to continue this legacy of giving and impacting the lives of others as I pursue a legal education and make contributions in the field.
