Training Workshop: Nesstar Software Suite
June 4-5, 2003

The training workshop was hosted by CDHA in partnership with the University of Wisconsin Survey Center (UWSC) and the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH).

The Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) is an effort to establish an international criterion and methodology for the content, presentation, transport, and preservation of "metadata" about datasets in the social and behavioral sciences. Metadata (data about data) constitute the information that enables the effective, efficient, and accurate use of those datasets. Nesstar software is an integrated suite of products aimed at facilitating the location and use of socio-economic, and similarly structured, data using the DDI. The software allows users to browse distributed data catalogues over the Web, examine detailed information about the data (metadata), carry out simple data analysis (e.g. tabulations and graphical displays) and then download data, in whole or part, in one of a number of popular formats. The system contains registration and authentication facilities to filter access to data as necessary and a suite of data publishing and server management tools.

The course explained the relationship between the DDI and the Nesstar software suite. In addition, trainers demonstrated how to install the Nesstar products, explained the relationship between them, and provided details on how to prepare and publish data to the Nesstar system.
