Downloading PGP
- Go to www.pgp.com/products/freeware.html
- Read the agreement and click the ‘I agree’ box
- Click on the Download button
- Choose ‘Save’
Installing PGP
- When the file has finished downloading, choose ‘Open’
(or navigate to the file PGP802-PF-W.zip and double click on it)
If you do not have a utility to open ZIP files, you can download one
from here: www.winzip.com/ddchomea.htm
- Navigate to the un-zipped file PGP8.exe and double click on it
- Follow the setup instructions
Creating an Exportable Key Set
- Single-click on the PGP lock icon on your start tray

- Click on the ‘PGP Keys’ option
- Click on the ‘Generate new keypair’ icon and follow instructions
Sending WISR your Public Key
- From the PGPkeys window, click on ‘Keys’
- Click on ‘Export’

- Save the file. Your Public Key is now in a file of the extension .asc
in the folder you chose when saving.
There are three ways of giving your public key to WISR: on a floppy
disk in-person, on a floppy disk by Fed-Ex, or
by email with phone confirmation.
By Floppy Disk In-Person
- Save your .asc file to a floppy disk
- Call or Email CDHA’s Data Analyst/Archivist to arrange an appointment
at
Phone: (608) 265-3937
Email: wisr@ssc.wisc.edu
- Bring the disk to:
Social Sciences, Room 4407
1180 Observatory Drive
Madison, WI 53706
By Floppy Disk by Fed-Ex
Save your .asc file to a floppy disk
- Send your disk by Fed-Ex to
Janet Eisenhauer Smith
Data Analyst/Archivist, CDHA
University of Wisconsin - Madison
Social Sciences, Room 4407
1180 Observatory Drive
Madison, WI 53706
By Email with Phone Confirmation
- Send your .asc file as an attachment to wisr@ssc.wisc.edu
- In the PGPKeys window, click on the ‘Keys’ menu
- Choose ‘Key Properties’

- Note the ‘Fingerprint’, a set of (seemingly) random words.
These words uniquely identify your public key.

- Call the Data Analyst/Archivist at
(608) 265-3937
and repeat this set of words to her. They will be checked against
the key you emailed.
Emailing WISR your Stata or SAS files
Free or Licensed Version
Using the Free or Licensed version
on a Windows machine:
- Open ‘My Computer’ or ‘Windows Explorer’
- Right click on your text file (e.g., myfile.sas or myfile.do)
- Under ‘PGP’ click on ‘Sign’ (not ‘Encrypt”
or “Encrypt & Sign”)

(If PGP does not prompt for a passphrase and
automatically creates both a .pgp and a .sig file, then click here:
No Passphrase Prompt)
- Enter your passphrase
- Uncheck the ‘Detached Signature’ option

You have now created a PGP file (myfile.sas.pgp or myfile.do.pgp).
It will be in the same folder as your original file. (Note: If you also
have a .sig file (myfile.sas.sig or myfile.do.sig) then you did not
uncheck the ‘Detached Signature’ option. Delete your .pgp
and .sig files and start again).
- Send the PGP file as attachment with an email message to:
wisr@ssc.wisc.edu
- NOTE: If you have the Licensed version with email plugin, do not
'Sign on send' from within your email client. Currently this is not
compatable with our email server, and we will have to ask you to re-send
the file.

Opening the encrypted and emailed results
- Open the email with your encrypted results
- Save the attached file in desired location
- Double click on the saved .pgp file
- Enter your passphrase
- Click ‘OK’
- The file has now been de-crypted and is in the same folder as the
.pgp file
