“The Division of Health Interview Statistics (DHIS) of the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) is pleased to announce the availability of geocode files for the 1997 to 2010 NHIS, based on the 2000 decennial Census geography, through the NCHS Research Data Center (RDC).
These geocode files were created by matching the NHIS addresses to the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD’s) address database through an automated process in HUD’s Geocode Service Center (GSC). The output from the HUD GSC geocoding process includes the Census block, block group, tract, county, state, latitude, longitude, and other geographic data with return codes indicating the reliability of the Census geographic codes. To create the final geocode files, NHIS merged in the geocode information from the Census Unit Control File (UCF) and additional flags that identify value discrepancies on block, block group, tract, county, and state between the UCF and HUD files. Also available through the NCHS RDC are the previous geocode files for 1985-1994 and 1995-2005 which were created using a different method.”
