Working Papers
The Center's Working Paper Series was initiated in 1971 to facilitate communication
between Center researchers and other social scientists and also to publicize
the broad scope of Center research activities. Working Papers are typically
pre-publication manuscripts that are disseminated to stimulate comment
or to make results quickly available.
The NSFH Working Paper Series is a subset of the CDE Working Papers. Papers
in the NSFH Series are produced using the data from the National Survey
of Families and Households. This separate series of Working Papers, which
carries the logos of the Center and of the NSFH, allows its users to see
the work resulting from the NSFH as a set. It allows for the dissemination
both of technical information about the survey and substantive reports
based on NSFH data in a shorter time than can be expected from most journals.
Obtaining a Working Paper
Some working papers are available on-line; these are highlighted in the
on-line lists. You may view these papers on-line or request a printed copy.
To request a printed copy of a working paper, please send mail to: cdepubs@ssc.wisc.edu.
Include your name and mailing address in the message. The paper(s) will
be mailed to you.
NOTE: For NSFH papers, if the working paper has been published, publication
details are included. If possible, please refer to the publication instead
of ordering the working paper. Only order the working paper if you cannot
obtain the publication.
To view a paper on-line, simply click on the paper's number (e.g., 95-01
or NSFH 66) in the working papers list. (Remember, only highlighted papers
are available on-line.) You will need special software to view a paper;
see more information on this below. Some papers have abstracts available.
You may view an abstract without using special software. Just click on
the word "Abstract" following the paper title.
About file formats
Most papers are published here in Adobe Acrobat format. To view them, you must
have Adobe Acrobat Reader
software. The software is free and is available in Macintosh, Windows, DOS and
Unix formats from the Adobe Corporation WWW site. If you are new to PDF files
or have trouble viewing them, here is help on using PDF
files.
Other papers are in PostScript format. You may view these papers on-line using
Ghostview. Free Ghostview software
is available for Unix, VMS (X11), OS/2 and MS-Windows formats. Or, you can download
a PostScript file and print it on your PostScript printer. PostScript files
are flagged with the word (PostScript) after the paper number.
