Note that for 1990, the original National Center for Health Statistics file, rather than the ICPSR file, was used to create the SAS transport file. Since this file is different from the ICPSR file, the original NCHS codebook has been digitized and is available in the 90 subdirectory (Adobe Acrobat .pdf format).

These files contain a data record for all deaths processed by the National Center for Health Statistics. Each data record contains underlying cause and demographic data for a death.
