What is "CDE Information Services?" CDE Information Services was formed to help CDE researchers locate and use demographic
information more effectively. The Print Library collection is catalogued and available via MadCat.
Further information about the staff, collections, and services of CDE Information Services can be found by utilizing the links at the top of this page. Where is CDE Information Services and when is it open? Can I have access after hours? CDE Information Services is located in Room 4471 Sewell Social Sciences Building
(1180 Observatory Drive). It is open Monday through Friday, 8:30
AM - 4:30 PM. Staff are typically available for consultation from
8:00 AM to 4:30 PM across the hall in room 4470. Keys are available
for overnight or weekend checkout to CDE faculty, staff, dissertators,
postdocs, and students studying for prelims. Library materials may be used within the Library by anyone. Full
circulation of print materials is limited to faculty, staff, and graduate
students affiliated with the Center for Demography and Ecology and the Center for Demography of Health and Aging. Circulation
privileges are also granted to faculty, staff, and graduate students
in the following departments and research institutes: Sociology, Rural
Sociology, Social Work, Anthropology, Economics, Human Development and Family Studies, the Institute for Research on Poverty, the Institute on Aging and Adult Life, and Preventive Medicine. All users must provide information for a registration
database.
Most books and bound journals have a check out card in the
back that require an email address and date of checkout. For items
without a card use the yellow slips located at the Circulation Desk.
Place checkout
cards or completely filled out slips in the tray on the desk.
Most items may be checked out for as long as they are needed.
Reference items circulate for two hours, or overnight
if checked out after 4 p.m. (reference items are marked with a yellow R
on the spine and have a yellow check out card). Software manuals can
be checked out for one week. To return items, place them in the
book return or leave the item(s) at the Circulation Desk. Items
are subject to recall after two weeks. Materials from most other
campus libraries can be returned via the CDE Library. Faculty, staff, and students
must return or renew materials at the end of the Fall and Spring semesters. If an item is not on the shelf, please ask staff for
assistance in finding or recalling the item. All materials owned by CDE Information Services (print, and electronic) and other selected Internet resources are cataloged and searchable over the Internet. Print Library materials are in MadCat. For materials held in other UW-Madison libraries, search MadCat. Use Worldcat to search the holdings of libraries worldwide. In addition, catalogs of libraries at other Population Research Institutes
are available online:
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) requests may easily be submitted online. CDE faculty may also place Interlibrary Loan (ILL) requests through the CDE Library in person or via email to jcarlson@ssc.wisc.edu. Requests for purchase can be given in person to any CDE Information Services
staff member or emailed to jcarlson@ssc.wisc.edu.
The person requesting the item will be notified when it comes in.
Requests for purchase for other campus libraries can be made using this
form.
What databases can I search from my office or home? This can be confusing, but is getting easier as more
resources are available over the Internet. The UW-Madison General
Library system offers access to databases, reference and full text resources
via the Libraries Home Page.
Many of these databases are available to users from their home or office and are noted with the following symbols: Is there a way to find the tables of contents of journals as soon as they come out? There are a couple of ways to accomplish this. Publisher Email Alerting Services: Some journal publishers email tables of contents for their journals at the time of publication. Publishers currently offering this service include Taylor & Francis, Elsevier Science (Sign up at ScienceDirect by clicking on the Alerts tab), and Sage. For other publishers, use the Publishers Catalogs' Homepage or search Yahoo or Altavista to see if they offer this service. Publisher Table of Contents pages: Many journal publishers mount
tables of contents, sometimes with abstracts and/or full text on their
web sites. If you do not know
the web site of the publisher, see the Publishers
Catalogs' Homepage or search using Yahoo
or Altavista to see if
they offer this service. How do I cite Internet resources in a bibliography? The UW-Madison Memorial Library has provided links to a variety of
Internet
Citation Guides. What kind of Library or Internet Training is available to me? Internet and database search training is offered to SSCC members through SSCC training sessions by SSCC and Library staff. The UW-Madison General Library system also offers a variety of Library and Information Literacy Instruction resources Can you recommend a Bibliographic Database Management System? CDE Information Services staff have limited experience with Bibliographic Database Management Systems. SSCC supports Procite and Endnote. Other options are available for installation on a PC. See Bibliographic Database Management Systems: Resources for Further Information.
